Thanksgiving is almost here, bringing with it a day full of family, football and everyone’s favorite – an abundance of food. However, preparing the meal is just as important as gathering around the table to eat it, so remember to keep these tips in mind to ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones this holiday:
- Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food
- Never leave the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently
- Keep children away from the stove at all times
- Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns
- Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags
- Keep knives, matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children
- Be sure electric cords from appliances are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child
- Make sure your smoke alarms are working properly
- Clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup
- Purchase a fire extinguisher to keep in the kitchen in case of emergency
